Acrylic on canvas
30 in H x 30 in W x 1.5 in D

I love the dramatic colors and contrasts in Juan Sánchez Cotán’s still lifes. He’d probably roll over in his grave to think I was inspired by him, but so be it. He can take it up with me when I die.

I used a small amount of molding paste underneath this painting to give it a bit of texture and slight streaking so that it looks aged. I also used several layers of glazes in dark colors (Prussian, umber, burnt sienna) and mixed them differently for different sections. The technique gave the overall painting depth, as well as a “perfectly” uneven faded grey quality.

I really wanted it to look old. With the paste and mix of glazes, it does.
